Rain doesn't have to ruin your Loch Tay trip. Here's how to make the most of a wet day with indoor attractions, cosy pubs, and atmospheric adventures.

Let’s be honest: if you visit the Scottish Highlands, you will encounter rain. Probably quite a lot of it. But a rainy day at Loch Tay isn’t a write-off — in fact, some of the area’s best experiences are enhanced by moody weather.

    Morning: The Falls in Spate

9:30am — The Falls of Dochart are at their most dramatic after heavy rain. The river swells, the water turns peaty brown, and the sound is immense. Put on your waterproofs and go and watch the spectacle. It’s genuinely awe-inspiring in full spate.

10:30am — Pop into the Breadalbane Folklore Centre in Killin (housed in the old mill by the falls). Local history, clan stories, and legends of the area. A perfect rainy-morning activity.

    Late Morning: Scottish Crannog Centre

11:30am — Much of the Crannog Centre experience is undercover or enhanced by the atmospheric conditions. Watching ancient fire-making techniques while rain hammers on the crannog roof feels remarkably authentic.

    Lunch: A Proper Pub Lunch

1:00pm — This is the day for a long, lazy pub lunch. The Falls of Dochart Inn has a roaring fire and excellent food. Or try the Fortingall Hotel for something a bit more refined. Linger over coffee.

    Afternoon Options

    2:30pm — Choose your afternoon:

    • Aberfeldy (20 min drive east) — Visit Dewar’s Aberfeldy Distillery for a whisky tour and tasting. Then browse The Watermill — a wonderful independent bookshop and café.
    • Comfort break — Return to your accommodation for a nap, a book, and a cup of tea. There’s no shame in embracing the cosy.
    • The walk anyway — Put on proper waterproofs and go walking regardless. A rainy walk in the Highlands, followed by a hot bath and a dram, is one of life’s great pleasures.

    Evening

6:00pm — Early dinner at your chosen restaurant. A wet evening is the perfect excuse for a long, multi-course meal. Try the local whisky selection — you’ve earned it.

    Rainy Day Essentials

    • Proper waterproofs (not just a light jacket)
    • Waterproof boots
    • A good book for the pub or accommodation
    • Cash (some smaller places don’t take cards)
    • A positive attitude — the rain is what makes Scotland so green and beautiful
