How to reach Loch Tay by car, bus, and train — plus tips for driving, parking, and getting around without a car.
Loch Tay is in the central Scottish Highlands, roughly equidistant from Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Inverness. Getting here is straightforward by car, and possible (if slower) by public transport.
By Car
The most practical way to explore Loch Tay. Key routes:
- From Edinburgh — M90 north, then A9 to Ballinluig, A827 west to Kenmore/Killin. Around 90 minutes.
- From Glasgow — A82 north via Loch Lomond to Crianlarich, then A85 east to Killin. Around 2 hours.
- From Inverness — A9 south to Ballinluig, A827 west. Around 2 hours.
- From Perth — A9 north to Ballinluig, A827 west. Around 45 minutes.
Driving Tips
- Many roads are single-track with passing places — use them. Pull in to the left to let oncoming traffic pass.
- Watch for livestock — Sheep, deer, and cattle on roads are common.
- Fuel up — Fill your tank before arriving. There’s a petrol station in Killin but not much else nearby.
- Winter driving — Carry warm clothing, a torch, and a phone charger. Roads can be icy.
By Bus
Limited bus services serve the area:
- Citylink coaches between Edinburgh/Glasgow and Fort William stop at Crianlarich (14 miles from Killin)
- Local bus services connect Killin to Callander and Stirling (check current timetables)
- Services are infrequent — plan around them and allow time
By Train
The nearest railway stations are:
- Crianlarich — On the West Highland Line (14 miles from Killin)
- Pitlochry — On the Highland Main Line (30 miles east of Kenmore)
Neither has direct bus connections to Loch Tay, so you’ll likely need a taxi for the final leg.
Parking
- Killin — Free car park at the Falls of Dochart (can fill up in summer). Additional parking at the top of the village.
- Kenmore — Free parking near the square.
- Ben Lawers — NTS car park (small fee for non-members).
- Along the loch — Informal lay-bys, but park responsibly.
EV Charging
Electric vehicle charging points are available:
- Killin village (ChargePlace Scotland)
- Kenmore area
- More chargers in Aberfeldy and Pitlochry
Check Zap-Map for the latest availability before travelling.
Getting Around Without a Car
It’s challenging but not impossible. Consider:
- Bike hire — Several operators offer bike hire
- Taxis — Local taxi services for point-to-point trips
- Walking — Many attractions in Killin are walkable from accommodation
